Diego Velzquez(1)

osmangemci.com As most aristocratic families and their children, he was taught to become a god-fearing and obedient and was intended for education in a profession that was considered to be respectable. When his skills in the arts became apparent even after getting training in the languages and philosophy, he began to study the arts under Francisco de Herrera. His teacher was known to be a vigorous teacher who disregarded the influences of Italian artists after leaving the art school in Seville. Herrera was known to have used brushes with long bristles and is believed to be the reason why Diego preferred such unconventional tools.
Diego was considered to be an ordinary student, who was dull and unexciting by his new teacher, Francisco Pacheco after he left the studio of Herrera after 12 years of apprenticeship. There Diego learned painting in the form of direct realism and also studied how to use proportions and perspectives and their relation with the subject for use in paintings. He stayed under the wings of Pacheco for five years which allowed him to stay in constant touch with current literary and artistic styles of the times.
After 5 years of apprenticeship under Pacheco who was also to become his father in law when he wed Pachecofs daughter, Juana he set out on his own and in 1620 he was already a well established artist in his hometown of Seville. He bore two daughters of whom only one survived and the eldest also married a painter named Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo. These were his only known family during the period when he produced works regarding sacred objects such as gAdoracion de los Reyesh which he finished in 1619 and gJesus y los peregrines de Emaush, finished in 1626. Both works are the beginnings of his inclination towards realism which is a style he would perfect during the course of his career as a painter.
